Verifying the accuracy and repeatability of a new invention takes much time and effort. To test Spectro™, Cadex assembled a test bed of 91 car batteries with diverse performance levels. The preparation consisted of a fully saturated charge, followed by a 24-hour rest period and a 25A discharge to 10.50V (1.75V/cell), during which the reserve capacity was measured. This procedure produced an astonishing +/-15% variation in capacity readings across the full population. When comparing the capacity obtained through a conventional discharge and by non-invasive means, one must take into account the vulnerability of lead acid in producing varied readings even when using highly accurate charges and load banks.

Figure 6 compares the reserve capacities of 38 randomly chosen car batteries. The black diamonds show the reserve capacity derived through a full discharge; the purple squares represent Spectro™ estimations using a generic matrix.

How can the RC readings be further improved? Best results are achieved by sorting the batteries according to architecture and CCA rating. We developed a model specific matrix and tested a group of same-model batteries. Figure 7 shows the reserve capacity readings derived through a conventional full discharge and Spectro™. With specific matrices, the readings approach laboratory standards in terms of accuracy.

Although the test results in Figure 6, and in particular Figure 7, look very encouraging, we need to be reminded that Spectro™ is not a universal battery tester capable of measuring any battery that comes along. It cannot be compared to a photocopier that duplicates any document or flat object by simply pressing the copy button. Research has brought about a variety of battery chemistries, each offering distinct advantages but none providing a fully satisfactory solution. With today’s variety of battery types, better choices can be made to suit specific user applications. To compare the longevity of nickel-metal-hydride under different load condition, a test was carried out in which batteries of the same type were discharged with a DC and digital load. In both tests, the batteries were discharged to 1.04 volts per cell. The DC load was a steady 500mA; the digital load simulated the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) at 1.65 ampere peak for 12 ms every 100 ms with 270 mA standby. (Note that the GSM pulse for voice is about 550 ms every 4.5 ms).

With the DC discharge, nickel-metal-hydride wore out gradually, providing an above average service life. At 700 cycles, the battery(hp elitebook 2530p battery) still provided 80% capacity. By contrast, the same battery type faded more rapidly with a digital discharge and the 80% capacity threshold was reached after only 300 cycles. Here’s a nice rant for you: One of my two Laptop batteries for my Inspiron 1525 battery  died a couple of weeks back in the middle of a business trip. Since I have two of them this wasn’t a huge issue, but still this is a major bummer especially since the batteries both are barely over a year old and have not been used very much at all. In fact I was using the battery a few days before it started ‘acting’ up and it has been holding a charge well.

Here’s what happens: The battery is not really dead, but it looks to me like some electronics inside of the battery are preventing the Dell Inspiron 1525 battery from charging. When I click on the battery indicator I get a funky blinking light and when inserted into the computer the the charge light just blinks orange instead of the regular green charging indicator. Did I mention the Dell Inspiron 6400 battery was working just fine a few days earlier with a charge hold well over 3 hours of work time.

This seems like such a rip off if you ask me. I started calling tech support to see if I could get a warranty on the Inspiron 1501 battery . Of course the warranty had expired exacly two weeks ago, and there was no budging the Dell support guy. FWIW, Dell doesn’t warranty batteries that are older than a year even if you have an extended warranty for the rest of the system.

Next I went to the Web Site to see what a new VGP-BPS8 VGP-BPS9 would cost and sure enough there’s some language that says it’s rated for 300 charge/discharges. Now I would really be curious how this is measured. I’m pretty sure this battery isn’t actually dead, but something has been quietly counting roughly how the batteries been charged and decided – dup, that’s enough for you buddy. So now I can’t even use that battery as a hold over battery while the system is plugged in (I like to use the battery as a UPS since we loose power on a regular basis here on Maui).

The worst part about this is that I rarely use the Sony VGP-BPS8 anyway. Sure when I travel I use the laptop on the plain or around a client’s office, but for the most part the machine is plugged in and under power. But even when it is – according to Dell the battery is discharged/recharged. If there’s electronics in the damn Thinkpad X60 battery
 shouldn’t it be smart enough to figure out that while it’s under power it should not engage the VGP-BPS8  in any way at all?

It really eats at me that we get reamed by so many companies any way they can get you. Always stick it to you in the details. There are a couple of other things that happened today that go along with that but I’ll leave that for yet another rant
